about

post-hoc commentary (2022).

"apotheosis" was my attempt at a manifestation of power. the driving beat in the song was inspired by the drums in the outro of mentallo & the fixer's "scum of the earth (bloody)", which is one of the greatest songs ever made and from a criminally underrated band. this song caused me to be a very small and short-lived blip on about six people's collective radar.

"being/called" was originally two songs, "kaleo" and "ontology", that were smashed together. "kaleo" (from the greek καλεω, "to call") was me playing with an idea that i overheard in college, that we name things because we fear losing them. "ontology" was one of the many philosophy-inspired songs that i was making around this time and didn't really have much going for it beyond that. the combination of the two was through the idea of a creator deity who created and named things based on memories -- one god among many but forever sundered from them.

"sublime ruin" was also originally two songs, "sublime" and "ruin". "sublime", as in the concept of the sublime, was me trying to make something that evoked the sensation of something both beautiful and terrifying. "ruin" was just a fast and crunchy distorted track with a simple melody. the two tied together when i discovered horace smith's version of "ozymandias", contemporaneous with the much better-known composition of shelley's, and it drove the idea of being awestruck at enormous ruins.

"no rest for the wicked" was a song i was working on around the same time and i thought that a relatively lighter track might serve as a coda for the headiness or aggression of the previous three.

all of the project files, samples, and instruments for these songs were lost several hard drives ago. i am also fairly certain that i had a much looser grasp of licensing issues and there are probably instruments or sounds that were used without proper attribution; however, without any insight as to their provenance, i don't know how to properly claim it after the fact, so these songs are provided free.

(original text) this is another body of thematically continuous work of a more fantastical nature.
