BABEL is a project built around a custom-coded, non-random, procedural number generator. its numeric output is rendered into a variety of outputs, including ASCII text, bitmap images, and MIDI files. the BMP files are imported into FL Studio as instruments using BeepMap and the scores for those instruments are the corresponding MIDI files; i have also included pianos as instruments for the same scores.
for the individual tracks, the "major" name comes from the generated ASCII text corresponding to the beginning of each block. the "procedural" name is structured as "babel_(superblock #)_(block #)_(chunk #)_(subchunk #)". the generator creates superblocks of numbers, each superblock corresponding to 1,000 blocks; each block generates 10 MIDI scores (chunk #), and each of those scores ends up being several hours long, so i have to break them up further (subchunk #). i may change the logic of the MIDI renderer to create 40 scores instead of 10, just to make it easier on me in the long run.
obviously, there is no way that i can create music from every MIDI score that is generated. one of my computers is doing nothing but running the base generator script and is currently on superblock 13 -- so just including up to superblock 12, that's 12,000 blocks, each of which would generate 10 MIDI scores, which would in turn need to be split into (at least) thirds. that's 360,000 scores already, and each of those is on average over an hour long, so just what i have so far is at least 41 years of music. the actual songs that i create are points that seem interesting to me, either conceptually, visually, or musically.
the "album art" for each track is a PNG version of the BMP generated for the corresponding block.
